A fantastic guest blog from Fran Ballesteros, pharmacist and Vitae Health Innovation Educator (Vitae).
There are plenty of articles which talk about the beneficial effects of certain ingredients for the skin, but there is one that is talked about very little and turns out to be the panacea for a beautiful, hydrated and luminous skin, which is sea buckthorn oil.
It can be found in two formats, oral or topical application. We especially like the oral form, since when acting from the inside the effect that is achieved is totally different from a cream.
Those who have tried it say that there is nothing like it at this level of hydration. You have to think that it hydrates the deeper layers of the skin, in addition to the mucous membranes, which translates into eyes, nose, mouth, intimate area and skin absolutely hydrated from within.
What is sea buckthorn oil?
Sea buckthorn is a natural shrub from coastal areas of Asia and Europe, although we can also find it in North America. Due to the climatic stress to which it is subjected, it has developed a unique composition that perfectly matches the human needs.
Its berries have been used for many centuries by traditional medicine such as Tibetan, which have taken advantage of its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties on the skin and mucous membranes.
What is so special about sea buckthorn oil?
The oil obtained from the berries and seeds of this shrub, contains many beneficial properties for the skin and mucous membranes. What most attracts attention is its high concentration in Omega 7 (palmitoleic acid).
Its exceptional composition in bioactive compounds confers a wide range of beneficial properties, especially at the regenerative level of skin and mucous membranes, but also at a nutritional level.
Omega 7 and the skin
Omega 7, also known as palmitoleic acid, helps to nourish from within, moisturize and rejuvenate the skin, in addition to promoting renewal and protection of the mucous membranes (ocular, oral, vaginal, gastric, intestinal etc.).
Sea buckthorn oil effects on the skin
Sea buckthorn oil helps slow down the aging process of mature skin, hydrating it and increasing its softness and elasticity, as well as decreasing the number of deep wrinkles.
As a source rich in antioxidants, sea buckthorn oil also protects the skin from photo-aging and the negative effect of free radicals caused by stress, smoking and environmental pollution.
The exceptional composition of sea buckthorn oil:
MONOUNSATURATED AND POLYUNSATURATED FATTY ACIDS
The seeds are very rich in essential fatty acids such as linoleic acid (Omega-6) and alpha-linoleic acid (Omega-3).
The oil obtained from the fruit represents the most important source of palmitoleic acid (Omega-7), which is a monounsaturated fatty acid.
It also contains oleic acid (Omega-9).
Antioxidants acquire great importance for the protection of polyunsaturated fatty acids and other cellular components of the skin and mucous membranes against oxidative stress.
Vitamin E: A major lipid antioxidant in cell membranes. Thanks to this mixture, the contribution of all the isomers of tocopherols and tocotrienols is achieved.
Β-Carotene: Precursor of vitamin A, essential for the well-being of the skin. Other carotenoids such as lycopene.
Vitamin C: Carotenoids act synergistically with tocopherols and tocotrienols neutralizing free radicals. In addition, the combination of different isomers of tocopherols and tocotrienols exerts a superior antioxidant action.
Also noteworthy is the presence of:
Folic acid: Antioxidant and key to the formation of red blood cells.
Flavonoids: Protect against ultraviolet radiation.
Other important benefits of Omega 7:
It favours the detoxification of the liver, therefore beneficial for liver health.
Anti-inflammatory effect (eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis).
Stimulates collagen production
Allied against Obesity.
Beneficial for dry eyes.
Omega 7 can be obtained through supplements and also through food such as avocado, olive oil and macadamia nuts.
